Nubia, an independent Chinese smartphone manufacturer formerly under the ZTE umbrella, has announced its 2023 flagship-grade gaming smartphone: the Nubia Redmagic 8 Pro.

Nubia promises tons of optimisations that improve mobile gameplay, with these features cascading down to general performance enhancements for other phone features.

It packs a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset clocked at 3.2GHz. For those just joining us, the SD8G2 is the latest Qualcomm mobile platform for Android phone manufacturers making premium-tier handsets. You can see what the chipset offers here, and how it compares to its predecessor here. Network nerds will be pleased to know it supports 5G, 6G, and even Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, on top of offering conventional options like NFCBluetooth 5.3 and a 3.5mm audio jack.

To milk its top-end chipset’s performance, Nubia paired the Redmagic 8 Pro with other key components for maximising uptime. It comes with LPDDR5X RAM (more than double LPDRR5 RAM speeds), and an additional Red Core 2 gaming processor for 20% extra GPU performance.

For heat management, it contains a liquid cooling plate (Vapour Chamber) with unspecified “600% higher” efficiency, on top of quiet 4dB, 20,000RPM built-in RGB turbofans to expedite heat dissipation through its 10 layers of cooling materials. Nubia claims that its cooling design maintains a maximum fuselage rate of 41.7°C.

In fact, its cooling techniques feel quite excessive. Cooling layers include a plate, under-display graphene, a centrifugal fan, air intake, an aluminium middle frame with rare earth materials, copper foil under the screen, conductivity gel, composite graphene, and another superconducting copper foil, all sandwiched into the mobile.

The display is a Full HD+ resolution (2,480 x 1,116 pixels resolution) 6.8-inch AMOLED panel at 120Hz refresh rate and 960Hz touch sampling rate, with 1,300-nits peak brightness and a screen-to-body ratio of 93.7% (minimal 1.48 to 2.28mm bezels around the sides). Further enhancing its panel is BOE’s UDC technology, adding transparent circuits below the screen for a see-through effect even at high pixel density (up to 400 PPI).

The battery offers 6,000mAh with 65W GaN fast-charging. To optimise its consumption further, Redmagic 8 Pro has “Cube Performance Optimiser” (CPO) that compensates in-game frame rates by working the cache and display to process images when there’s no user interaction (e.g., during cutscenes).

Physical enhancements include built-in 520Hz dual-shoulder triggers for game controls. It still offers a complete set of triple rear cameras (50MP main using Samsung GN5 sensor, 2MP macro, 8MP wide angle) and a 16MP selfie under-display camera.

In case you’re wondering, yes, the Redmagic 8 Pro is Android 13, with its proprietary reskin called Redmagic Mora 6.0 (offering perks like dynamic wallpapers, Game Space plug-ins, and other fringe features).
